Description

This training pack was developed alongside the Scottish Qualifications Authority’s (SQA) Professional Development Award (PDA) in ESOL Literacies: Teaching Adults Reading,Writing and Numeracy to respond to this call for accredited training in teaching ESOL literacies.

This training pack (and corresponding qualification) is for qualified teachers of ESOL (CELTA / Trinity Certificate or equivalent).

The PDA in ESOL Literacies: Teaching Adults Reading,Writing and Numeracy was accredited by the Scottish Qualifications Authority in March 2005. Further information on the award can be found by following the link at www.sqa.org.uk/files/hn/DDM0E35.pdf.

The course contains the following:

  • Introduction: Lists the content and gives advice on how to run the course. 
  • Pre-Course Pack: Provides forms, questionnaire and pre-course reading.
  • Session 1: Links to Adult Literacies in Scotland and qualification introduces the course, looks at adult literacies and principles of good practice, defines an adult ESOL literacies learner, looks at barriers to learning, and considers the links to the PDA in ESOL Literacies qualification.
  • Session 2: Social practices and reading seeks to develop an awareness of the Social Practice approach when working with adult ESOL literacies learners.
  • Session 3: Reading and writing skills considers some of the key factors involved in teaching reading and writing.
  • Session 4 Writing skills, spelling strategies and specific learning difficulties considers some of the key factors involved in teaching writing and spelling strategies to learners with specific learning difficulties in an ESOL context.
  • Session 5: Numeracy considers some of the key factors involved in teaching numeracy in an ESOL context.
  • Session 6: Assessment, learning plans and recognising progress looks at initial interviews and assessments, individual learning plans and assessment record keeping in an ESOL literacies context.
  • Session 7: Teaching mixed levels looks at how to develop strategies for teaching mixed level ESOL literacies groups.
  • Session 8: ESOL literacies materials looks at a range of ideas for developing and evaluating authentic ESOL literacies teaching materials.
  • Session 9: ICT for Learning and Teaching demonstrates and raises awareness of the use of ICT.
  • Session 10: Published materials and portfolio considers how to adapt published material for use with adult ESOL literacies learners and how to prepare a portfolio for the Professional Development Award.
